Measure book — the reading

Kitchen guides: renovation advice from Moorabbin

Between the first thought about a kitchen and the first tape on a wall there is a period of reading. It is when the words get sorted out — makeover against remodel, engineered stone against natural, galley against L — and when most of the expensive decisions are quietly made. These guides are written for that period. They are grouped below in the order the questions usually arrive: what it costs and how to plan it, what the layout can and cannot do, how the joinery is built and filled, and how the surfaces and the light finish it.
Each guide names the service it belongs to, so the reading has somewhere to go once it is done.

Nine guides in all. They are meant to be read out of order, in the order your own kitchen asks.
Group 01 — before anything is drawn

Read first.
Sets the order of
every later decision.

A budget written before a layout is a guess; written after one, it is an estimate.

Planning and cost

Planning a Kitchen Renovation Step by Step
The order the decisions have to be made in, and what each one locks before the next — the reading version of our 12-step process.

What Drives Kitchen Renovation Costs in Melbourne
Where the money concentrates — joinery, stone, trades and the things found inside the wall — and which of those a complete renovation moves and a makeover leaves alone.

Group 02 — the footprint

Moorabbin, Highett and
Bentleigh house stock repeats
a short list of footprints.

Layout is the one decision that cannot be corrected later with a better finish.
02

Layout

Kitchen Layouts Explained: Galley, L-Shape and Island
What each footprint does well, what it will never do, and how a side door or a window changes both. Pairs with Kitchen Design.

Small Kitchen Ideas for Bayside Units and Galleys
Making a short run work harder without making the room read tighter — the thinking behind Small Kitchen Renovations.

Group 03 — what holds everything

The largest single line
in most quotes, and the
one specified in the most parts.

Carcass, door, edge, hinge and drawer runner are five decisions usually treated as one.
03

Joinery and storage

Choosing Kitchen Cabinetry: Doors, Finishes and Hardware
How a door front, an edge and a hinge are specified separately, and when a modular run gives way to custom cabinetry. Sits behind Kitchen Cabinets.

Kitchen Storage Ideas That Survive Daily Use
Drawers against doors, corners, pantries and where the bin honestly ends up — the reasoning applied in Kitchen Storage.

Group 04 — last on site, first noticed

Chosen at selection,
measured late, installed
in a fixed order.

Lighting is the only finish that has to be decided while the wiring can still move.
04

Surfaces and light

Benchtop Materials Compared for Real Kitchens
Five surfaces — engineered stone, natural stone, compact surfaces, timber and laminate — judged on heat, water, edges and repair, with availability and specification confirmed at the Materials stage. Feeds Kitchen Benchtops.

Splashback Ideas: Tile, Stone, Glass and Full Height
One plane, four ways to build it, and the interruptions that decide which. Read with Kitchen Splashbacks and Kitchen Tiling.

Kitchen Lighting: Task, Ambient and Under-Bench
Three layers planned at design stage, before the plaster closes — and what each one is actually for.

White kitchen featuring a hexagonal tiled splashback, stone island benchtop, timber accents and stainless-steel range cooker.
Reference photograph: benchtop, splashback and light read as one surface decision once they are installed, though they are chosen and measured at different stages.

Where the reading leads

Nine guides narrow the question.
These three pages carry it
into the work itself.

Reading ends where a measured room begins.

When the reading is done, book the measure

Once you know whether the layout or only the finishes are the problem, the next step is a room measured properly in Moorabbin, Highett, Hampton East, Bentleigh, Bentleigh East, Cheltenham, Mentone or Heatherton — and a quote written against those figures.
Still deciding which guide answers your kitchen? Describe the room and we will point you at the right one.
